Dear Fellows! From Executive Director Dr. Robin Dorff

Dear IOPL Fellows!

Here we are, approaching Weekend #7 with the Fall 2005 Class, and beginning the interview process for our Spring 2006 Class. Time flies!

I hope that you have noticed some of the changes and advances we have made. The website is gaining functionality every week thanks to the efforts of Kelly and especially Kristen, our newest addition to the Staff. (I should also thank John Pearson who is providing invaluable technical input and helping make the changes happen.) We encourage all of you to use the website and to give us feedback and suggestions. This is still very much a work-in-progress, and it will be a great success if you help us.

Toward that end, let me ask for two things in particular:

EVENTS: Please keep an eye out for events in your area that IOPL Fellows might want to attend. We want to use the Newsletter and the website to highlight upcoming events, and we can do that best if all of you are the "eyes and ears" of IOPL. Just send us info via email and we will make sure it gets out.

THREADED DISCUSSIONS: We really want to get all of our alumni online and actively engaged in topical discussions. They can address political and public policy issues, of course. But they can also address things that IOPL might be doing, thereby contributing further to our responsiveness to your needs.

Finally, an update on regional receptions. Because of a very busy schedule we decided not to squeeze in receptions in Greensboro and Wilmington this Fall. But we are actively working on them. If you would like to help us put together a reception in your area, please let us know.

As always, I look forward more than ever to staying in close touch with all of you!

Robin

Spring 2006 Fellows Applications

The deadline for applying for the Spring 2006 Fellows Program has been extended to October 31.

Please send us any names that you feel would be interested in this program!

You may email us at nciopl@bellsouth.net

African American Fellows are Raising Funds!

The IOPL African American Fellows are getting together for a fundraising dinner to encourage and sponsor other African Americans in the community to get involved with IOPL as Fellows!

All of the money raised will be used to sponsor an African American Fellow in future classes.

We are eternally grateful for their continued support of such a worthy institution!

Congratulations to Newly Elected Fellows

Congratulations to IOPL Fellows Andy Dulin (Fall 2004) and Michael Barnes (Spring 2004), our newest Charlotte City Council-Elect Members. Both won in the primary election and are un-opposed in the general election!

Pat Delair (Fall 2005) came out fourth in her bid for Wilmington City Council with enough votes to secure a runoff! She has subsequently decided not to pursue the runoff this time around. Great job anyway!

Remember to let us know how what your election results are so we can congratulate you!

2005 Leadership Triangle One Day Snap Shot

Since 1992, Leadership Triangle has educated and promoted regionalism through eight-week educational programs each fall and spring. If you've wondered what Leadership Triangle can do for you, join them on November 15 and experience a taste of an eight-week curriculum all in one day!

You will hear and talk with regional leaders including: Jim Goodmon (Capitol Broadcasting), Sig Hutchinson (Open Space), Ted Abernathy (Research Triangle Regional Partnership), Andrea Bazan Manson (Triangle Community Foundation), Joan Rose (North Carolina Public Radio - WUNC), Melanie Sill (News and Observer), Dan Davies (Business Leader Magazine), Richard Hart (Independent Weekly), and Maria Montaρo (Univision 40).

Best of all, the $100.00 per person registration is 100% applicable towards either the fall or spring program if you register for either class before November 30.

Deadline to register Thursday November 10.

What Are You Up To?

Tell us what you are doing in the community as an IOPL Fellow!

Beginning next month, each newsletter is going to highlight a Fellow for all to get to know better. If you or someone you know is doing something worth noting as an IOPL Fellow, we want to know!

Send us a note and we will begin a "Fellow of Honor" column.
