Program of the Institute
The sessions are divided into three general categories: 1. Personal Style and Communication The first activity for each class takes place at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro where the Fellows participate in a program of self-evaluation, leadership development, multi-cultural differences, and group dynamics.2. Governing and Public Policy Issues Thirty-five percent of the sessions deal with governing and policy issues facing state and local governments. Fellows engage in extended dialogue with key elected and appointed officials, social and political scientists, business leaders and other professionals who provide valuable information and insights into the dynamics and demands of governing. 3. Campaigning The balance of the program focuses on the skills needed to run a good and effective campaign for public office. The goal is to develop candidates who know how to run for office the right way. Guest lecturers of local and national prominence discuss all aspects of campaigning:
The Fellows conduct their own public opinion poll, learning the skills of sampling, telephone interviewing, coding, computer processing of data, and how to effectively apply all the numbers to a campaign strategy. Using the most up-to-date manuals and software, the Fellows become familiar with the many uses of technology in 21st century campaigns. A significant amount of time is spent on the television news process as each Fellow learns what makes a good news story; writes and produces a 30-second commercial; and has three television interviews: a field interview with a reporter, a studio interview, and an interview at a live remote location with news anchors. Each Fellow writes a short paper on "Why I Am A Democrat / Republican / Libertarian / Independent" and makes an oral presentation of it to the class. Campaign skill training and discussion all come together in the complete campaign plan each Fellow writes at the conclusion of the program. After each session, the Fellows participate in a written and oral evaluation of the speakers, the program content and their learning experiences. Coming from every part of the state, from different backgrounds and ideologies, the Fellows share varied experiences and opinions. Each Fellow gets something unique and important from these ten weekends of intense and rewarding activities.
